June 2012

Nathan turned 16 on June 6th and spent the day with friends at Lagoon.   I can't believe he is 16 already.  He is becoming a fine young man and I am very proud of him!

Shortly after Nathan's birthday we headed to England!  We were met at the airport by my longest (I don't want to say oldest, in case it is interpreted wrong) friend in the world!  I have know Olivia longer than any of my friends,  I just wish it were easier to spend time together!  We had a lovely Sunday with their family.

 The next day they took us to our canal boat that we had rented for the week.  It is 5'8" wide and about 50' long.  It has a kitchen, two bathrooms and it sleeps 6.  We drive it ourselves through the canal system in England, which means operating the locks manually.  You can see the locks behind the boat in the picture below.  I really loved this part of our vacation.  The boat only goes about 3 miles an hour, so you get to literally slow down.  There were elderly people walking on the path next to the canal that were moving faster than us. It was fun spending time with the family in the boat and playing games each evening.

We often stopped in the canal side villages at the local pub, for some pub grub.  We met a couple of blokes who were living on their canal boats.  They met the night before and decided to meet today to have a loud shirt contest.  We happened to meet them at the same time, and David was wearing his Hawaiian shirt, so he was entered in the contest.  Some other lucky person in the pub got to be the judge, and Mike, in the Dragon shirt won.  We had a friendly lunch with them telling lots of jokes and stories and playing games.  We felt a little like meeting the crazy locals in The Three Broomsticks,  or even the Hog's Head when we were done.

After our canal week was over, we headed to the home of the Bard, Stratford-upon-Avon.  We stayed at a lovely B&B, The Forget-me-not.  We saw all of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust sites,  including Shakepseare's Birthplace, and Anne Hathaway's Cottage.  Do you like our shirts?  I think London was feeling the love.






          
 We saw three plays by the RSC while we were there.  King John, Richard III and Julius Caesar.

We spent a day at Warwick Castle.

It is a cool 1100 year old castle.  We saw several people we 'knew'.  Some of the RSC actors were there, the lady that taught Relief Society the Sunday before in Olivia's ward, our Stake President from our last stake, and a lady I took Shakespeare training with in Cedar city.  It's a small world.

 After Stratford we moved on to Bath.  It was a very windy day at Stonehenge.

We visited the ancient roman baths.  David & I also treated ourselves to a massage in the new Thermae Bath Spa.               

The Raven was one of the many pubs where we ate.  Raven tried their specialty, the Raven Pie.   We stopped in the town of Timsbury on the way back from Stonehenge.  We found the town library.  We had a lively dinner discussion in their pub.

The highlight of the Bath stay, was the Regency Ball.  It was held in the Guild Hall.  Jane Austen herself could have gone to a ball here when she lived in Bath.  We went to the dance class that afternoon.  We learned 11 new  dances.  Our dance experience really helped to pick these up quickly.

 After Bath we were off for a short stop in London. The men folk were pretty tired - nap time in Hyde Park.

We saw the TARDIS, and a view of the city from the London Eye.  

We did the tour and exhibition of the Globe Theater before we went to see their production of 'The Taming of the Shrew.'

 The city had 50 painted pianos set up all around for people to play.  Raven is playing the one at St Paul's Cathedral.

 After London, David and the boys came home.  David had to get back to work, and the boys had Youth Conference.    Raven & I stopped by Kings Cross Station on our way to Paris.  On the Eurostar train we got our own private compartment!                             The first thing we did was take a Segway tour of the city.  It was a super fun way to get around the city and we found ourselves wishing we had them for the whole trip.

 Raven and I had a blast in Paris.  We at yummy french food. (Pastries!)  We went shopping, had a Segway adventure, went to the Louvre, the Musee de Orsay, the Orangerie,  took a cruise on the Seine.

 This was such a fun family adventure.  I loved every minute of it!

May 2012

 Raven turned 12 in May.  We had lots of parties to celebrate.  Here is a picture of her Alice in Wonderland Mystery Party.  She also had a Space Camp Party and a Color me Mine Party to include all of her friends!  We are so glad she was born!

London's PiPod team got to go to Legoland California for competition since they won at the state level. The boys weren't fierce competitors at this one, because they decided not to participate in the robot competition on Sunday.  They did a great job and had a blast ending their FIRST Lego  League career.   I'm happy to say they plan to stay together as a team and go on to bigger and better things.

They are a great group of boys and I'm glad London has them as friends!  They have fantastic mentors that I am so grateful for as well!

The day after the boys got home from Legoland, it was time to go to Shakespeare Showdown!  Four of the boys from PiPod were also in Shakespeare this year.  I took two Shakespeare casts this year.  My Merchant of Venice cast is in the red shirts and Love's Labour's Lost is in the blue.  We were a big enough group and had exactly the same number of boys and girls, so we got our cabins to ourselves, which was nice.  They did a great job performing their plays for the last time and had a lot of fun watching the others and participating in the classes.  Nathan's & London's groups were the last two finalists in the Shakespeare Showdown again this year.  Nathan's team came in first this year,  London's was first last year.

We went to Mendocino California for Memorial weekend this year to spend time with our friends, the White's.  This is a view from their beautiful ocean front property.  It was a fun weekend and the start of our summer adventures!

April 2012

We got to get away for a week as a whole family at the beginning of April fro Spring break.  We took the RV to southern Californina.  Here is a picture of some of my Flynn's in Disney's California Adventure.

Another picture of us.  I say we got away as a whole family,  but Nathan didn't actually spend much time with us in Disneyland.   He also stayed in the RV the day we went to Sea World.  Go figure.

 April also means Shakespeare.  Here is my lovely cast of Love's Labour's Lost at our last rehearsal before we got in the theater, and our cast photo on closing night.   These are always a lot of work,  but so much fun and so worth it!

March 2012

Yes,  I realize that it is now June and I am 3 months behind on my blog-a-month goal.   I am going to try to catch up.  This year is almost 1/2 over and has been amazing.  It will continue to be full and amazing, and I want to have some record of it.

The highlight of March was a trip to Japan that I go to go on with David.  We spent our time in Tokyo and Kyoto.

We got there about 2 weeks early for cherry blossom time, but we managed to find one tree in bloom. It would have been amazing to see all of the cherry trees there in bloom.

February 2012

February was a fun and speedy month.   Even with the extra day, this month has flown by.   I guess it was because we were so busy doing fun things.     The first highlight of the month was the Regency Romance Ball.   The ball was held two nights this year and David and I got to go both nights to help teach the dances.   Here we are in our ensembles for Friday night.     Saturday night was even more fun, because we had a lot of friends join us.    Abe Fox won the Mr Darcy award this year.   I think we should try to keep it in the group every year!  I love being able to recreate the most romantic parts of the Regency Era!


February also brought the performances of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.  Raven played Scout and London played Jem.   They had a lot of fun with this.  They really enjoyed going to every rehearsal.  They worked hard and did a great job with their parts.   I was so proud!


They had 7 shows and did a great job every time.  They even figured out how they were going to improv on the night that Dill threw up onstage from the balcony during the courtroom scene.  The projectile vomit landed in Atticus's chair.  Thank goodness he wasn't sitting in it at the time.   The show went on like nothing happened, except that Dill and Reverend Sykes left the balcony for a while.  Dill came back with a different shirt on in time to do the scene where he and Scout go out and Scout asks "What's the matter with you?  Ain't ya feeling all right?  Why'd you run out?"  - It couldn't have been a better line to follow that!      This was a great experience for them and all who came to see the show.

We bought a new vehicle!   I have been saying for years that I wanted a school bus.   Ms Frizzle is one of my heroes and I wanted my own Magic School Bus to take on field trips.   Well, Nathan noticed one in the back yard of a house near us and decided to go knock on the door and ask if they wanted to sell it.   The owner had been asked that question many times, but we happened to ask at the right time.  He and his wife were planning to get rid of some stuff and take off and travel.  Plus he got to meet our family and I think he liked us and thought that we would love and appreciate the bus.   Which we will!   We are excited to have many adventures and field trips in our bus with our friends.   Seat Belts Everyone!!

January 2012

So,  This year I'm going to try to do a monthly blog, instead of waiting until the end of the year.  So for I'm two months behind,  but I figure if I can do this every other month it is still a great improvement over last year.   So,  let's start with January.

January was party month for Fusion-io.  They hold their holiday parties in January, instead of December.  I got to go to all of them.   The first one was in Denver.  There are about 15 employees in that office.  It reminded me of the early days of Fusion.   The next Friday the party was here in Salt Lake.   This one was for around 600 + people, including spouses.   Much bigger than the first year, when I hosted the Christmas party at my house and did all the cooking for 20 people.    The next we we went to the one in San Jose.  That office has over a hundred people there now.   It was really fun to see everyone and see how it is growing.  

We got to spend our week up at Snowbird this month too.  It has been over 2 years since we were there last.   It is harder to go to Snowbird now that the kids are older then when they were little.   Being at Snowbird is not far enough away to really get away,  so we find ourselves coming down often for our usual life commitments.  Our plans to have friends come up and spend time with us kept falling through as well.   It was still fun, and I enjoyed every minute of our time there.

We got back in the swing of things with the new year.   I am having a great time with both of my Shakespeare classes.  The conquest class is doing actors training, and the Elite class is studying Hamlet.

I started teaching Zumba at our church for the women in our stake and surrounding areas.  It is going really well.   We consistently have about 26 people show up for class.  That is about the max that can fit in that room.   We could move it to the Stake center,  but this location is really central for everyone that is coming. If it grows much more we'll have to move.  It is a lot of fun, and I'm getting a lot of positive feedback from the women who come.

London's Lego League team had their competitions again this month.   At our regional competition they did well, and won the Robot Design category and earned a place at the state competition.   They did even better at the state competition.  Their first robot run was excellent and held steady as the 2nd best run of the day.  The team ended up winning 2nd place overall and a chance to go to Legoland to a tournament.   We don't even have to fundraise for this, since they earned enough last year to pay for this as well!  Good Job PiPod!   The amazing thing is that all of their work was stolen around Thanksgiving and they had to start from scratch.  I'm glad the boys and the coaches decided to start over.  I think they learned a great lesson about overcoming in the face of adversity!

2011 in Review

Today is the last day of 2011.  It has been an amazing year.  It's definitely one we want to remember.  These are our highlights of each month.

January

January's highlight was the FIRST Lego League Competition.  London has been on a team for a couple of years and this was the first year Utah held a competition.  Our team, PiPod, was kind of the flagship team and helped get a lot of the other teams started.  Everyone knew who we were, and there was a lot of pressure.  The team did a lot of work and we were expecting to win something, but when the awards ceremony came, they didn't call our name and we thought we hadn't won a thing,  until they called the overall winner --- PiPod--!!!  We won!!  We get to go represent Utah at the World Festival!!!   We were in for more education and adventure!

This is an awesome group of boys and coaches that I'm glad London has the chance to associate with.

February

My highlight this month was the Regency Romance Ball that we attended for our Valentines date.  It was held at the Masonic Temple.   Here we are all dressed up and ready to go.  David won the 'Mr Darcy look alike contest'.   It was a lot of fun with dinner and dancing and several friends there.   We are looking forward to it again this year and we have several more friends who will be attending with us.

March

In March David won 'Utah CEO of the Year' from Utah Business Magazine.  This is a picture of him giving his acceptance speech.  He is amazing and I'm so proud of him!   Nathan and London also gave speeches, and debates this month and they did very well in their competitions.

April

April brought my 4th Shakespeare production "Much Ado about Nothing".  And let me tell you,  there definitely was 'much ado' to make this happen,  though it wasn't all for nothing.   For one thing,  I made all the costumes this year.  That was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun, and now I have a good costume closet to work with.  The kids were fun to work with and I am always amazed by all of their hard work and what we are able to pull off!

April was also the PiPod trip to World Festival.  It was held in ST Louis.  It was a lot of fun to travel with the PiPod families.  We flew into St Louis about an hour before a tornado hit the airport.  It was exciting, but we missed it.  We rented a car and headed to Springfield IL and and had pleasant, clear, drive the whole way.    The Thygerson's who were on the same flight as us didn't get out of town as fast and saw some of the storm.   We were worried the airport wouldn't reopen in time for our other team members to arrive, but it did.   We got to see the destruction when we flew home.

We spent a few days before the competition touring Springfield, IL,  where Abraham Lincoln lived and is buried.  Then we went to Nauvoo and met up with most of PiPod.    The competition was exciting to be a part of.  There really were teams from all over the world there.   The international teams were older than us, around 16 years old.   We didn't win anything here, but we still learned a lot and had an amazing experience.   I should mention that these boys learned a lot to get ready for this.  Since winning the competition in January, they had to fundraise $12,000 to go to the competition.  They did it by marketing their team and giving presentations to Venture Capitalist and people interested in Diabetes research.  Their project was an implanted blood glucose monitor that can send info to your smart phone and runs on a blood battery.

May

May brought more Shakespeare adventures.   I took my troop up to the Utah Renaissance Faire where we performed for 3 days.  I drove the RV up there all by myself to be our base camp.  That was an adventure in itself.  We camped out with the gypsies and watched the night time fire shows.  Quite exciting.

We also went to Shakespeare Showdown for two days in May.  That is always fun.   I flew to London immediately after coming home from camp to meet David for Memorial weekend.  He had been traveling a lot, and it was fun to catch up with him for the weekend.  When it was over, I flew home and he stayed in New York.

Raven turned 11 this month.

June

Fusion-io IPO!!  This was pretty exciting.  David took his company public on June 9th.   It was a lot of work getting ready for this and we didn't see him much before this.   We all got to go to New York for the IPO.   This first picture is of the New York Stock Exchange with a giant Fusion-io banner draped in front of it.   It was very impressive.  And kind of surreal.  When we started this little thing 5 years earlier we didn't even imagine it getting this big this fast.  

We got to go up on the podium and ring the opening bell.

Again, quite exciting.  We had a breakfast in a giant boardroom before this and then we got to go down on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as trading got started.  It was a very neat experience, and I'm glad we got to take our kids.   Nathan turned 15 this month.

I just have to post this picture from June as well.  David and I went to a Civil War Ball.  This picture was taken by the Salt Lake Tribune.   We made the cover of the Utah section of the newspaper.  It's become kind of infamous now, showing up all over the place.

July

 At the end of June and early July we took a road trip in our RV.  We went to Mount Rushmore and to Yellowstone.   The destinations were lovely and the weather was perfect for our trip.   It was fun to camp right in Yellowstone, and not have to make an hour trek in and out of the park each day.   But my favorite part of the trip is simply being together in the RV.  It's a slower pace of life and it's fun just to be together in our cozy little home.  It was a nice way to regroup as a family after the crazy months we had going a million different directions before this.

all year thing, not just July.  I became a certified
Zumba instructor in February and have  been teaching this year.  It is a lot of fun!   I also lost 30 pounds this year, which I'm quite proud of.  I teach in my house now, and I love to have friends come 'shake it' with me!



August


David and I celebrated our 19th Wedding anniversary by buying a new house!   This was kind of a big deal and it happened very fast.  I wasn't even considering moving at the beginning of July,  we had found the house
and closed on our anniversary on August 15th and were all moved in
by August 29th.    It was hard to leave our Shady Meadow neighborhood.  We have loved living there for over 15 years.   We do love the new house and the new neighborhood.    We are closer to our homeschool activities and I don't spend near as much time driving anymore.   It is a fun house to have gatherings in and we are enjoying having family and friends over.

September

It was London's turn this year for the 'me and mom' trip.   We went to Huntsville Alabama to Space Camp!   It was a lot of fun!  We learned a lot about the space program and the astronauts.   We got to do fun simulations, like walking on the moon, and anti-gravity, and a spinning one that the astronauts had to do to train on to reorient themselves.   We went with a bunch of other home-schoolers from around the country, mostly from the east coast.  The food was awful, but everything else was great.

We also go to go on our book group retreat with our friends to St George.  We rented a house that had 2 swimming pools.  We pretty much just hung out there most of the time enjoying the facilities and the company, but we did head out one day to hike a slot canyon and do some repelling.    With our PiPod trip, the New York trip, London, Hawaii in August (I forgot to mention, Fusion-io club trip) and this trip,  we did a lot of traveling with other people this year.

Nathan started at Paradigm High school this month and London, Raven and I started at our new homeschool co-op, Renaissance Academy.  They are students and I am teaching two Shakespeare classes.

October


We got an email from the Glenn Beck show requesting home schoolers to come be on their show.
This has been a dream of Nathan's,  so at 4:00pm on Tuesday we said, "Carpe Diem"  and booked flights to New York for 8:00 am the next day.    Nathan and I had a lovely evening in New York.  We had dinner at Shake Shack and then went on a walk through Central Park and then to the Lincoln Center to see 'War Horse'.   The next morning we did some more city exploring.  Unlike the suite we had last time we were in New York, this hotel room was not much larger than the bed, so we didn't spend any time there.

We had to be at the studio at 1:00 for the show.   There were about 30 kids on the show.  It was kind of a panel discussion about homeschooling.  Nathan did very well.  He spoke up and had great things to say.  In fact, we've been getting almost weekly calls from them asking him to come back.   We're trying to fit that in our schedule when we can,  but New York isn't exactly close.

November


My 5th Shakespeare production "The Merchant of Venice" was held in early November.  This was with my class that has had 1-2 years experience.  They are a great group and they really wanted to be there, so it made it a lot of fun.

David has been traveling again. Ok still.  So it was nice to take time off with him to go to Kauai for Thanksgiving.


I'm really liking traveling at Thanksgiving time.  I think we should make it our tradition.

London turned 14 this month.

December

I did something very strange this month.  I stayed home and slept in my own bed every night this month.  I know, weird.  I think that is a first for a very long time.    I was supposed to go to China and Japan with David,  then it got changed to just China, then it got cancelled.  I was okay with that.  December is a busy time to travel without the whole family.   We also spent our first Christmas in our new home, and this is the first Christmas in a few years that we haven't been traveling over the holidays.   We took the opportunity to hold lots of parties with friends and families in our home.   We have loved spending time with those we love.

We are looking forward to 2012 and seeing what adventures await us, both at home and abroad!
